psst: this was today's look, well, part of it at least. making every attempt to get my hair kourtney kardashian meets pocahontas long, every attempt.

my 30for 30 remix started off last night while pulling out separates from my wardrobe to use for the challenge, and after a good few hours of sifting and sorting i finally managed to choose my 30 pieces.

3 pairs of jeans, 4 dresses, 3 skirts, 11 tops, 3 jackets, and 6 pairs of shoes make up my 30.

last night i mentioned posting daily, but have decided to do a weekly 30for30 post, showing you all a week's worth of looks and how i mix and matched my way to get them.

am very excited about the challenge!

i promised earlier on twitter that i'd be doing a blog make-over of sorts, but, to be honest, i quite like the clean look of the blogger layout i have now. i'm a creature of habit you see, and painfully reluctant to change.

although i won't be keeping my blog make-over promise, what i'm offering instead is a new post. i've never gone into the outfit posting because, well, i feel so silly posing for photographs. but in order to make it fun for both myself and you all, i've decided to join the 30 for 30 remix.

what is the 30 for 30 remix, you ask? it's a clever little idea that i stumbled upon a while ago while perusing kendi everyday, and have been wanting to do it...but my aforementioned photo-awkwardness kept holding me back. basically, all it involves is picking out 30 pieces from your existing wardrobe, creating 30 outfits from the 30 pieces, "remixing" what you have so that you don't need to go out and buy new goodies. clever, no?

so, i'll be spending the rest of my evening watching the golden globes and preparing myself for my very first 30 for 30 remix. tomorrow you can all see my choice of 30 pieces, and the first remix (it'll be an awkward pose, this much i assure you).

baked: the perfect chocolate chunk cookie

as a self-confessed greedy person with a ridiculous sweet tooth (thank you, daddy), after a bit of nudging on from some very cool folk, it seemed foolish of me not to share my love of all things culinary along with all things fashion.

welcome the first, of hopefully many, "baked" posts.

my absolute favourite perfected recipe of zhuzhed chocolate chip cookies

this recipe has a yield of about 60 cookies if you use teaspoon sized mounds as discussed in the directions.

ingredients

250g of unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup light brown sugar
2 Tbs castor sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 large egg
2 and 3/4 cups of plain flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 and 1/4 tsp baking powder
340g good chocolate, coarsely chopped (or, if you like me like a bit of variety, try 240g of chocolate and 100g coarsely chopped nuts, for these i used walnut and almond)

directions

1. preheat your oven to 170 degrees celsius
2. line baking sheets with greaseproof paper
3. in an electric mixer, beat the butter, sugars, and vanilla for about 3 minutes on high. lightly beat the egg in a small bowl and add to creamed butter.
4. in a separate bowl, sift together flour, salt, and finally, the baking powder.
5. gradually add the flour to the creamed butter and combine on a low speed, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally to ensure the cookie dough is perfectly combined.
6. lastly, add your chocolate and nuts to the bowl and mix until the chunks are evenly distributed.
7. using a teaspoon, scoop out the dough and place teaspoon sized mounds onto your prepared baking sheets. remember to allow room for spreading by keeping your cookie dough mounds about 4cm apart.
8. bake for 10 - 12 minutes, until the cookies are lightly browned at the edges.
9. remove, and allow to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely...or, if you are really like me, now's the time to pour a glass of milk and devour a truly decadent warm cookie (with the centre wonderfully chewy/gooey!)

am so happy to say that i am finally on holiday! with the past semester's portfolio review over and done with, i can breathe easy and focus on daveydarling.

so much has happened these past few weeks, and we've moved into a new house - it's perfect, well, everything apart from my bedroom that is. because of being busy with varsity work, my room was left untouched, and boxes unpacked awaiting my attention. i managed to get my cupboards packed, but the room on the whole is needing some tlc. so, i'll also be looking for some inspiration into turning the space into the perfect bedroom for me. while i'm busy doing that, i'm also preparing new summer stock that i'm hoping you will all love.

these holidays see two friends getting married (at one i'm a bridesmaid - sweet lordy i'm excited about this!), picnics and lazy beach days, as well as a road trip. i have plans of photo-documenting it all.

looking forward to getting back into the swing of things with regular posting and wonderful surprises.

with the project runway finale airing here in south africa just last night, my twitter timeline was abuzz with comments on how unfair it was that the amazingly talented mondo didn't win it all...as much as his story tugged at my heartstrings, i couldn't deny that i'd loved gretchen jones's final range. yes. loved.

i went on to find her website, and with a new range of clothing and jewellery, miss.jones has me loving her more sophisticated "granola". i quite fancy that billowing skirt, the leather inlay top, knee length dress, and those leather shorts...dammit i cannot choose. i quite fancy everything!

it's been such a manic past few days with ramadaan, and trying to get my range ready for the market, and then i had to get this nasty cold (day three now). but i thought that i had to find a way of blogging today!

with july as my birthday month, i was gifted quite a few lovely pieces by family and friends, and these along with a few purchases make up my latest in with the new post.

ramadaan kareem

tomorrow marks the first of the month of ramadaan for us muslims, the month in which our holy book, qur'an was revealed. during ramadaan, muslims practice one of the basic tenets of islam, siyam - fasting - from dawn til sunset, abstaining from all food and drink (yes, not even water!). there is an unmatched sense of calm and peace that this invisible act of commitment to god brings.

i am so excited for ramadaan, and have decided this time around to express my spirituality more outwardly - by donning the hijab. as i don't usually wear it, it's a tricky situation in that i hope not to come across as disrespectful by wearing the hijab for the month of ramadaan alone. i have always dressed modestly during the month and know that this decision comes from a good place.

with that decision being made, i thought that i'd love to find a way of blending the hijab into my usual way of dressing, and not jus do the normal draped styles (if they work out, i'll do a few outfit posts to show you all).

i stumbled on plenty of turban-clad-fashion-lovers and decided i have to give it a try! wish me luck!

to all my muslim followers/readers/perusers, mabrook! may your patience and strength draw you closer to the almighty, may peace be with you and your family during this most auspicious month of ramadaan and always, insha'allah.

in the midst of winter, with durban not it's usual sunny self, i've found myself gravitating towards a few pairs of shoes in particular, and thought it best that i share them with you. herewith, my favourite go-to winter shoes...

back row: tan riding boots from country road, black oxford booties from studio w at woolies, grey suede platforms from woolies, nude suede wedge booties from mr.p front row: olive brogues from mr.p, nude suede and tan snakeskin heels from my mom(gino paoli's circa 1988), cream pointed flats from rage, and white soft plimsolls from woolies.

i've got mixed feelings about posting this, because now that i rummaged thru my cupboard to take these out, i need to put them back in, and in order to do that i need to clean my shoes cupboard. not something i'm looking forward to, but it must be done! the heels, flats, boots, trainers and sandals are all jumbled up, and it's like a scavenger hunt finding the right and left shoes some days!

i would love to wear pairs like these...

a girl can dream!

you may, or may not know, that before i started daveydarling, and while still at varsity, i baked cupcakes galore for charity bake sales at varsity, and for the essenwood craft market. my love for little baked wonders is still going strong, and i bake quite often, for my own, my family's and friends' cravings.

when i decided to include a few new posts, i immediately knew that baked had to be one of them! so, in the next few days, and with a new camera, i'll be baking up a storm, and photo-documenting it all. sharing a few of my favourite treats with you all.

i'm in love with the longer hemlines, hippie chic vibe of mix and match prints and texture.

pretty jewels

for some time now i've practiced my magpie ways and have been collecting jewels, wonderous rings, bracelets, necklaces, bangles, earrings, anything that glitters really! but, i've been storing them in plastic containers and baskets in my cupboard. now, i'm not saying that this isn't a clever solution, because the clear tool kit boxes that i use are perfectly segmented to fit all my jewels in. but now that my cupboard is bursting at the seams, i could do with the space the boxes are taking up!

i found something like this online, and thought i'd get one (or six) for the inside of my cupboard doors.

but then i thought, there has to be a prettier solution...and, courtesy of google, i found these clever options...

i'm thinking of doing a mix of these three above, a little segmented wooden box hung up alongside my whitewashed frames, and a few pretty vintage china pieces next to my orchid on my bookshelf. yes, i think so.

which one do you like? or how do you keep/ display your jewels?

hello lovelies, i really feel bad for not keeping to my promise of regular posting, and for delaying the makeover. it's been crazy days here for me, but i've got some time set aside for operation-blog-makeover tonight (after going to watch the hangover 2).

i unfortunately will not be attending july's i heart market, i'll be taking a bit of a sabbatical, working on samples for the new range. am hoping it'll be worth the wait for you all!

in with the new (well, new for me)

hello lovelies, so as mentioned in my previous post, i will be dedicating some much deserved attention to my blog, and giving it a make-over in the next few days. i'm hoping to be more interactive and post more regularly (despite my daily demands).

in the meantime, here are a few of my new favourite things. and by new, as this post's title reveals, i mean new to me, a mix of gifted and thrifted goodies.

1. ray ban gold plated signet frames circa 1983, gifted to me by my dad
2. seiko 70's gold serpentine bracelet watch with tortoise shell face. this was my mom's, and she graciously passed it onto me.
3. vintage brass bracelet with semi-precious stones (tiger's eye, jade, quartz). i am in love with this bracelet, picked it up at the i heart market this past weekend, and have tried wearing it everyday because of how much i love it.
4. another i heart market purchase, the pendants are made from vintage trophies, lovingly recycled into one of a kind pendants.

exam stress is (almost) behind me

i must apologise for my lack of blogger-activity of late. i've had a major personal hiccup in the passing of my father two and a half weeks ago, and these exams couldn't have been at a more inopportune time. but alas, they're in full swing, and as of wednesday (god-willing!) they'll be done! to be honest, i can't wait to dedicate some proper time to the blog, and by proper time i mean a bit of a make-over, and regular, all-encompassing content. i really do hope you'll love what i've envisioned for my little blog!

the 63rd annual costume institute gala at the metropolitan museum of art was as usual drenched in fashion glory. but these are a few of my favourite ladies working amazing dresses and incredible styling. what do you think?

jessica stam in a gorgeous dusky princess tommy hilfiger dress.

ginnifer goodwin in a topshop unique gown in my favourite hue! i adore the pale blue against the rich green.

diane kruger looks ravishing in a black floor length draped silk chiffon skirt with that thigh high slit, and a nude chantilly lace top, both by jason wu.

mary kate olsen looking all kinds of boho chic in a vintage givenchy dress.

ashley olsen was an absolute showstopper in this vintage christian dior couture piece. those sleeves were spot on for what i was hoping to see at the costume ball.

everybody's favourite indie girl of the moment, florence welch, who also performed at the event, wore her tossled flame red hair down with this all white yves saint laurent dress and dramatic fur.

despite my crazy change of season sinus issues, i have spent the day sourcing, planning, and doodling for daveydarling, and thought i'd share some of my inspiration with you all...

perfectly pretty: mulberry
these feminine pieces are given a tweak with cinched waists, ruffle details and paperbag waistbands. such romantic fashion, i love it!

new lengths: jil sander
apart from the initial sensual overload from the pops of colour, the new longer lengths are so fun and flattering.

botanicals: stella mccartney&erdem
such pretty prints in gorgeous shapes. i fell in love with the idea of these defined prints against the neutrals you're used to seeing from daveydarling.

seventies: aquilano rimondi
i adore the bold prints, fab saturated colours, retro prints and play on volume in this range that has brought some 70's flair to 2011. i dig it.

i keep telling you all how busy i am, and when i finally get the chance to blog, i'm always amazed at how quickly time has flown by and how i feel like i'm still busy with the same pile of work...as much as i dislike this in limbo feeling of the project i've been busy on, i'm quite pleased to say that it's finally happening this sunday, and i'm so excited to have it all come together.

been so busy!

these past few weeks have been nothing short of crazy! with the fashion show, assignments, i heart market prep and work, i was jus about keeping afloat (a la berocca boost might i add). but, am glad to say, that the worst is over, and i can breathe a little easier this week. only a little, because even tho assignments are out of the way, my work project is in two weeks, never mind everything else!

i missed turn up the tunes tuesday last week, and i do apologise, but fear not, i have some pretty rad stuff awaiting you all for tomorrow. as usual, it'll be a mish-mash of everything.

i recently bought a beautifully illustrated notebook for a dear friend's birthday, to add to a birthday box of little goodies. it was one of those random blog browsing evenings that i stumbled upon whimsy, and as i had a look through her delightful site, i realised i had to get something, and that something was the notebook pictured above.

you can find whimsy at the i heart market here in durban, yes, the very same one that you can fidn me and my little daveydarling at. her illustrations are amazingly detailed and jus so cute and clever...and so are the quirky brooches and earrings...i spotted a few i fancied and will be spending some of my earnings at her stall. it'll be money well worth spending!

with time drawing closer and closer for the fashion for charity durban show, i know that it'll be a full day of daveydarling, and i won't have any time to work on my assignments, so i've spent most of my time on my two major essays, and working on the other two in between jus to give my brain a breather.

i'll be spending my friday evening ensuring all my pieces for the show are in perfect condition, all accessories bagged and tagged so the actual day will be a breeze. i plan on taking some photos backstage, of the girls getting ready, of all the fabulous people, and all the rest...so be prepared for some blackberry quality photographs before i get my hands on the professional photos of the night.

while trying to decide what to wear to the event i stumbled on a few pieces that are absolute lust haves, and as with everything else, i decided to share these with you!

asos grey felt trilby (they ship to south africa fyi...this is a rather dangerous bit of information for me). i adore hats and beanies, and this would be perfect for chilly days, don't you think?

seriously beautiful michael kors silver and rose gold timepiece. yes. i would say this one would make the ideal birthday gift for my 23rd in july (and yes, friends and family who read my blog, this is a hint).

this soft, silk, tulle trimmed brassiere a la phillip lim is jus amazing. that is all i have to say.

this oxblood leather asos portfolio case is another one of those dangerous items...i'm already mentally converting zar's to dollars.

these h by hudson powell cut out nougat leather brogues are heavenly! i have a few pairs, and they're such versatile little babies, i wouldn't mind adding this particular pair to my collection.

i've been so caught up in everything that i (almost) let my 10 000 hits pass me by! i've decided that this is a huge blogger milestone, and appreciate all of you folk that decided to tap this (in the words of a very cool persian italian speaking friend-doesn't he sound wonderful?lol).

because of my tight work and assignment schedule, i haven't been able to plan a little something something for this, but perhaps for my bloggerversary in april? yes, i think so. and i'm thinking sushi.

before i get carried away in the details, i have to remember that i have a pile of work in front of me to prepare for tomorrow. and yes, it is rather last minute, i spent my long weekend lazing about barr today. i've got a busy week ahead, work commitments, daveydarling fittings, assignments, and everything in between. but i do promise some blogging in between...especially with tomorrow being tunesday already! time flies i tell you. flies.

i mentioned before that daveydarling would be showcasing at the fashion for charity durban show this month.

i'm busy with my last few samples, and have most of my pieces ready for tomorrow's fittings (please do hold thumbs that things go swimmingly!). the daveydarling pieces will be a blend of gorgeous chiffon blouses in cream, black, and polka dot pink; high-waisted pants and shorts in tailored linens; silk organdy tops, and some soft jersey viscose pieces. it's great, wearable pieces that i'm hoping you all would love to add to your closets!

thought i'd share a sneak of my ten looks for daveydarling for the fashion for charity show. this was taken on my little berry just after i'd decided that i need to stop changing things around...12:15 or so (i tell you folk i burn the midnight oil!)

you can expect a lot of seperates (that i hope you'd like to make your own and integrate into your wardrobes!) like high waisted bottoms: gathered shorts, 3/4 peg-leg trousers, flair skirts, and tailored chinos; chiffon blouses, and some easy to wear feminine dresses. as always, it's pretty pret-a-porter.
